VARNASRAMA COLLEGE at SSKBK: PART 10-3 VILLAGE TECHNOLOGIES – WEAVING

*Weaving cloth from pure cotton*

The textile industry in the modern world stands out to be one of the richest industries falling just behind the pharmaceutical industry. And it also stands out to be one of the, if not ‘the’, major environment polluting industry all over the world. The survey tells that the cloth most of us wear is bound to harm the skin and internal organs due to excessive use of synthetic materials and harmful chemicals in dying.

Anirudh and Hemanth, active members of IDVM-India research teams have been working hard from the last two years and more researching deep into the use of original cotton produced from the crop grown with indigenous seeds and traditional methods including all phases from getting cotton to yarn form and finally to a useable cloth.

Hemanth took the trouble to come to the Varnasrama College all the way from his remote village in Telangana State to share his research findings in traditional weaving. There were theory classes explaining the hazardous nature of the modern textile industry, specifically how those traditional methods are on the verge of extinction and their efforts to revive them. Hemanth also explained in detail the different stages in getting the cloth out of cotton. The students also got an opportunity to practice making small threads from cotton which seemed very simple but turned out to be a highly skilled task.
