Diversified Farming in Kamyavan

Diversified farming is a practice whereby we grow multi crops in one area. Normally when one grows one type of crop, one has to remove the unwanted wild weeds; and removing the weeds is one of the biggest headaches in the farming activity.

Below are some of the advantages of diversified farming:

1. Increases soil fertility. Recent research studies have proved that as we increase the variety of the crops, the soil fertility also increases.

2. Nutrition balancing of the soil.

3. No dependency on single crop. If one crop fails, we can gain and depend on other variety of the crop.

4. Soil improvement happens in the long run.

5. In agriculture we are always worried about crop weeds. So, instead of weeds, we allow other crops to grow which helps us economically also.

6. One variety acts as a cover crop for other.

7. Helpful especially to the cows and other farm animals by providing different kinds of fodder. (Normally they get only one type of fodder in the whole season.)

“… This is a revolution, we just throw the seeds once, wait while chanting Hare Krishna. We grow millet, jowar, mung dal, etc., recently we just harvest the mung dal, and after 20 days we will get another crop from the same land…” said Sri Rama das.
